Why do people keep compairing Constitution to Victory??? We are lucky to still have both of them.

  2. sgregg5257 30. Mar, 2011 at 9:10 am #

Come on people the war ended over 200 years ago. Victory was gallent ship servering her country and Constitution was a gallent ship serving her country. Both are national treasures.

If you say oldest ship that is still here today it would be the HMS Victory, But if you say the oldest ship still in commission its the USS Constitution. And the Constitution looks better than the Victory in my opinion. (Cute) xD

    @Glousta
A commissioned ship is one on “active duty”. A ship can be decommissioned and than put in port as a museum but not be commissioned. The USS Constitution was decommissioned for a time to be used as target practice but public opinion saved her and she was restored and recommissioned.

@PlaidShirtsAreAwesom Because in the 1790s, Congress authorized the Navy to build six frigates and the Constitution was one of those six and is the last still in existence. The Navy keeps her around because its a link to not just their past, but America’s. Its the same reason the Royal Navy keeps the Victory around, because it has personal significance to them and their nation.

And who says she’s no match for the enemy? No one ever suspects the wooden sailing ship to be carrying the nukes. >;)

Why is it still in active duty???? It’s no match for enemy ships!

@Glousta The HMS Victory is awesome and so is the USS Constitution. I hope both countries never send them to war again because of the power of the newer warships.

I wonder if in EXTREME cases of emergency, the cannons could be used in warfare again? They wouldn’t be very effective, but I wonder…

the HMS Victory is in permanent drydock. She is the oldest commission warship. The Uss Constitution is the Oldest Commission Warship Aflote..

HMS Victory is still in the #2 dry dock at Portsmouth. Hasn’t been afloat since 1922. She is a ‘commissioned’ ship, requiring that she be staffed by Royal Navy personnel but she is not an ‘active’ ship. Personally, I would love to see her under sail, like the Constitution.

  12. Glousta 30. Mar, 2011 at 4:07 pm #

Yes, the HMS Victory is afloat but under renovations and apparently, permanently docked, so not in active service. This info comes from Wikipedia and the official website of HMS Victory. The USS Constitution is still on active duty, sails regularly and is seaworthy. She is manned by members of the US Navy.

you’re missing the point – the USS Constitution is still in active service!

This is such a lie. the HMS Victory is way older than the USS Constitution. The HMS Victory was launched in 1765!

It’s nice to hear “Anchor’s Aweigh” again – one of my favorites.

The key word is afloat. My son joined the navy to become a tour guide aboard the USS Constitution for his first duty. I was lucky to be aboard for the 1985 Turnaround Cruise.

I believe that you will find the HMSVictory is in dry dock…while the USSConstitution still sails, also…

It’s great that it’s been kept in use after all this time. It’s a living piece of history.

  19. Glousta 30. Mar, 2011 at 8:35 pm #

You are correct. HMS Victory was launched in 1765 and commissioned in 1778. The Constitution was launched and commissioned on Oct 21, 1797.

  20. ericintohistory 30. Mar, 2011 at 9:32 pm #

uh, correction. HMS victory is the oldest commissioned ship in the world. Uss consitution is the oldest ship still in active service.

Constitution aka old iron sides struck 1797, sister ships Congress, President, Chesapeake.

The Constitution didn’t want to go into the water but onces she was there she hasn’t come out.

No. The original American Enterprise was the US’s first Ship-of-the-Line. The Constitution, and her 5 sisters were heavy frigates. There was Constitution, Constellation (later rebuilt as a 32 gun Sloop of War), Independence, Congress, United States, and Philadelphia.

  25. irishoforiel 30. Mar, 2011 at 11:29 pm #

I belive the orginal USS Enterprise was the same class as Constitution.Good old New England oak trees!
